In phase one of the Zenex Spark Project between 2007 and 2009, the PSP worked with the Metropole South District, the Zenex Foundation and a range of service providers to implement an integrated project in 7 primary schools, boosting English and Mathematics competencies in the Foundation Phase and the Intermediate Phase.

Termly workshops were run for all teachers and every school was visited at least once a term for individual classroom-based support, as well as afternoon work sessions in each Learning Area.

Phase two of this project (2010 – 2011) deepened the intervention and focused strongly on reading. The PSP’s task, as the Literacy and English service provider in this phase, has been to introduce teachers to a Graded Reading Scheme in their classrooms. The quarterly afternoon workshops and regular classroom support continued.

Eighty-two Foundation Phase and fifty-two Intermediate Phase teachers participated in this phase of the project.

The Zenex Foundation arranged for external evaluation of this project.
